The Pickard team have been attending MIPIM every year since 2005 and probably the most striking feature this year was the almost complete absence of the huge Russian pavilions along the seafront area of the exhibition. In previous years virtually the whole promenade area was taken up by these huge pavilions promoting various cities and regions of Russia; this year there were none. I think the attitude towards Russia was summoned up by the promotion line of a Japanese architect ' there are still opportunities in Russia'. Very different to the strident tone of just a couple of years ago.
However the atmosphere at MIPIM this year was definitely upbeat which is not that surprising with money still historically cheap and stock markets racing away setting also historical highs. Consequently the mood was 'hot'.
And again this year Kyiv was 'flying the flag' for Ukraine with our world famous major Mr. Klitschko making an excellent pitch of the opportunities for investment in our wonderful city. Even offering to be the personal bodyguard for any investors putting their money into any of the various opportunities being promoted on the stand.
Maybe next year Lviv could join or maybe even a Ukraine stand!
For the Pickard team it was as always a rewarding few days; with some maintained and new business contacts, fine weather and as always in France excellent cuisine.
